EOOC Learning and Social Weekend

Location: Strathcona Wilderness Centre Lodge.

When: Friday March 24th to Sunday March 26th, with optional overnight bunkhouse style accommodation.

Come and stay for the whole weekend camp, or choose which sessions to register for.

Friday March 24th
Check-in from 4:30 pm
5:30 pm to 7:30 pm Pot-luck social
7:30 pm to 8:30 pm Welcome and plan for the weekend.
8:30 pm to 10:00 pm Maps, routes and reminiscences from past championships

Saturday March 25th,
8:00 am – 9:00 am Breakfast
9:00 am – 10:15 am
Session 1A: Beginner, novice and intermediate courses; handrails and attack points.
Session 1B: Advanced courses; Good legs, good controls, good courses, (Control, Attack point, Route).
10:15 am10:45 am Tea, coffee and chat time,
10:45 am -12:00 noon.
Session 2A: Map reading and off trail orienteering techniques.
Session 2B: B event course planning
12:00 noon – 1:30 pm Lunch, walk or ski, one-on-one chats about route choice or course design, or other social activities.
1:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Session 3A: Map simplification and route choice; which way to go, what technique to use, plan for some sample legs and group discussion/critique.
Session 3B: Practice: preliminary design of a 5 course B event.
3:30 pm – 4:00 pm Tea, coffee, snack and chat time,
4:00 pm – 5:00 pm Map reading games and other orienteering games.
5:00 pm – 7:00 pm Meal break
7:00 pm – 8:30 pm Map making from LiDAR data presentation.

Sunday March 26th
8:00 am – 9:00 am Breakfast
9:00 am – 10:15 am
Session 4A Small group practice choosing routes (Control, Attack point, Route), describing what you would see along the way, what techniques you would use, what landmarks to check off. recognizing the attack points etc
Session 4B Course Planning for Forest events; terrain selection considering parking, finish and start locations. Difference between Middle and Long events, objectives for the different courses, economical use of controls etc. What is involved, initial planning, control checking (Maprun), leg/map checking, controller’s job, course vetting, day of the event jobs.
10:15 am10:45 am Tea, coffee and chat time,
10:45 am – 12:00 noon
Session 5A Small errors not big ones, relocation, post race review, Maprun, route gadget.
Session 5B Sprint courses for all ages. Criteria, speeds, route choice, traps etc. Plan urban sprint courses for discussion.
12:00 noon1:00 pm lunch
1:00 pm – 2:00pm clean up and leave Lodge
2:30 pm – 5:00 pm Orienteering event (location depending on weather conditions)
