Forest Event near Smoky Lake

Date:  Saturday September 11, 2010
Come prepared for any weather and wear old clothes.  Long pants are always better than shorts for orienteering on intermediate and advanced courses!  Please bring a watch.
Map:  White Earth: 1:10,000; 5m contours.  Field work: Ales & Vendula Hejna (2004, 2005)  This area embargoed for the three weeks prior to the event.
Terrain:   Detailed sandy terrain with many hills, depressions and a few large marshes.  Vegetation is open coniferous forest with deadfall well mapped.  Established trail network.
Location:  About 16km southeast of Smoky Lake.  See directions below and location map
Registration and beginners' clinics:  11am - 12:30 pm.  Register on-the-day only.  Beginners' clinics on demand.
Starts:  11am - 1pm
Courses close at 3:30pm - everyone must check back in by this time, finished or not.
Courses/Loops
1 Beginner/family/solo junior course/loop with controls on or close to paths or other handrails (such as fences, vegetation boundaries) 2.8km*
2/3 Some of the controls will be of novice standard, with controls 50-100m from handrails such as trails/cutlines/distinct vegetation edges; others will be cross country at an intermediate level. 3.6km*
4 Short Advanced / technically difficult course  3.6km*
5 Medium Advanced / technically difficult course  5.1km*
7 Long Advanced / technically difficult course   7.1km*

Members

$7 for an individual or for a couple/small group sharing a map.

Whistle

compulsory - bring one or buy one from the registrar for $1.  A group needs just one between them.

Directions:
Location map

From north Edmonton:  Hwy 28 to Smoky Lake.  Continue east on Hwy 28 for about 10km after the end of the town.  Turn right/south onto paved RR 162.  This turn is about 50 metres before the highway crosses the White Earth River.
Drive south down RR 162 about 2.7km to the T junction.
Turn east/left onto Township Road 592.  After about 800m it bends and becomes RR 161.  About 2.5km south down this road you will come to the parking area.

From East Edmonton
(and Calgary!).  You should consult a provincial road map if using this route. 
Take Hwy 21 north and then Hwy 15 northeast past Fort Saskatchewan.  
Turn north/left onto SH 830 (sign posted to "Vinca Bridge")
At the T junction, turn east onto Hwy 38, which soon becomes Hwy 45, still going east.
After driving for about a total of 34km east, turn north on SH 855 towards Smoky Lake.
About 4.3km after crossing the North Saskatchewan, turn east/right along Township Road 584; after about 6.4 km this road bends north and becomes RR170.  After about 800 metres (at the stop sign), turn east /right onto Twp 584A.  Follow this road (and the orienteering signs!) for about 8km as it heads northeast and changes to Twp 590A.  Where it meets RR 161 is the parking area.
