Forest orienteering event at J J Collett Natural Area,
near Morningside

 

UPDATE: Course lengths added [April 11],
The organizers will be collecting donations for the JJ Collett Foundation who have provided the parking lot you will be leaving your vehicle in, the outhouse you might use, the fence round the whole area to stop you getting too lost and the benches and gazebos you might be tempted to use while on your course.
Weather forecast for the Morningside area, so you know what to wear/bring;  the event will be held rain or shine.

Terrain:              Detailed with many small hills, depressions and a few large marshes.  Vegetation is variable ranging from areas of thick undergrowth, deadfall to runnable forest and open land.  Established trail network. A fence surrounds the entire one square mile area.

Registration:     On site from 10:45am - noon (Beginner clinics offered at the same time, on demand)

Starts:               11:00am 1:00pm

Courses Close: 3:30 pm - everyone must report back in by this time.   Safety bearing: south to the road you parked on.

Directions:  

From Edmonton : (NB we are not allowed to hang orienteering signs on the QEII, but there will be direction signs thereafter)    QEII south to the Morningside exit.  Turn left onto Secondary Hwy 604 and go under the bridge.  After the railroad tracks, turn right into the village of Morningside.  At the far end of the village (3 blocks), turn left.  Follow this road south for 3.5 km.  At the crossroads, turn right.  The entrance to the JJ Collett Natural Area is about 800m on the right.  Park in the parking lot or on the side of the road and walk in through the gate.    Location map from Edmonton

From Calgary :      Hwy 2 north and take “2A South Lacombe ” exit about 8 km north of Lacombe.  At the stop sign at the end of the exit ramp proceed across 2A onto Milton Road.  Follow Milton Road as it goes through a long "S" bend to the north and then east.  About 600m after the S bend ends turn left (north) onto Range Road 262.  Follow this for 3 km to a T intersection.  Turn right and go about 800m to the J J Collett Natural Area entrance.  Park in the parking lot or on the same side of the road as the entrance (left side).  Walk in through the gate.   Location map from Calgary

What to bring:

Be prepared for any weather – jacket or warm underwear if it is cool; hat and sun screen if it is sunny.  Long pants advised.  Water and cookies provided.  Bring a watch, compass and whistle if you have one; if not you may rent a compass ($1 + driver’s license) and buy a whistle ($1).  Bring a change of clothes for after the event, especially dry socks and shoes.

What to take away:  fond memories, all your belongings and your garbage!
