This is your chance to orienteer on the Tiger Lily map, which was first used for the 2005 World Masters Orienteering Championship, as part of  Edmonton's World Masters Games.
The terrain consists of ancient sand dunes with pine and deciduous vegetation, shallow marshes and deep ravines. Black bear and lynx have been seen in the area in previous years.
Fort Assiniboine, an historic Hudson Bay trading post, boasts the world's largest wagon wheel and pick, adjacent to the Museum.  Well worth a visit!

COMPETITIVE CATEGORIES

Some courses have been combined but not in a consistent manner.
Middle Distance - Saturday Morning
Starts from 11am to noon: punching start, no later than 12 noon, no sooner than 2 minutes after the previous competitor on the same course.
All courses are at 1:10,000.  5m contour interval.  2 hour time limit
From the assembly (parking/finish) area to the start is 700m.

Courses 7 & 8 are at 1:15,000; all other courses are at 1:10,000. 5m contour interval. 
3 hour time limit.
Assembly (parking/finish) area is the same place as for the Middle Distance on Saturday. 450m walk to the start.

Age is determined by the age you reach during this year.
Juniors must be no older than the age stated, adults must be at least the age stated.
Individual entries only; groups may participate on recreational courses.

TIME LIMITS: competitors will have a maximum of 2 hours to complete the middle distance, 1 hour to complete the sprint and 3 hours to complete the classic distance.
ELECTRONIC PUNCHING: The SPORTident electronic punching system will be used for all categories at this event. Participants who do not own their own e-cards may rent one for $2 per day*.
WHISTLES & COMPASSES: Whistles are compulsory and will be for sale for $1 at registration. Compasses will also be available for rent for a $1 per day*.

AWARDS: Medals will be awarded for the competitive categories in each of the three events. Ribbons will be awarded in the open categories.
AOC ELIGIBILITY: to be eligible for the AOC awards you must be a member of the AOA.

RECREATIONAL COURSES

Three different recreational courses are available each day for individuals or groups who wish to enjoy a walk in the countryside. We are using the SPORTident system (electronic punching) for all participants at this event, so everyone will get a finish time, but times will not be published. We think you will be interested in the other information this system provides as well.
No pre-registration - register on the day of the event only for recreational courses.
RECREATIONAL ORIENTEERS PLEASE NOTE: Even though you can’t pre-register for the recreational courses, you MUST send in payment if you want to go to the Feast.  You can do this by writing a cheque or putting the cash in a labeled envelope and handing it to one of the organizers at a regular Wednesday event.
ENTRY FEES: $10 per map (which may be shared) - includes beginners clinic and SI card rental*. (groups: $3 per additional map, if wanted). Compass rental* and whistle sales also available.

REGISTER & START: between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm on Saturday and/or Sunday
COURSE CLOSING: 
Saturday - check back in at the finish area by 2:30 pm
Sunday - check back in at the finish area by 3:30 pm

Course 1 beginner, about 2 - 2.5 km long
Course 2 novice, about 2.3 - 2.8 km long
Course 3 intermediate, about 2.5 - 4.5 km long
Sunday's courses will probably be a little longer than Saturday's.
LOCATION    Location map
From West Edmonton: travel west on Hwy 16 (Yellowhead Hwy).  Turn north onto Hwy 43 towards Whitecourt / Grande Prairie for 24 km.
Turn north onto Hwy 33 for 46 km, traveling through Barrhead to a major junction with a stop sign.   Turn west at the junction to stay on Hwy 33, and travel 32.5 km to the Holmes Crossing Ecological Reserve sign.  Turn left/southwest onto the Holmes Crossing road and drive on the gravel road for about 4 km.  Park where indicated.

From North Edmonton: north on Hwy 2; at Clyde, turn west onto Hwy 18, which later becomes Hwy 33. Drive west and northwest for approximately 82km (to just before Ft Assiniboine). Turn left (southwest) onto the gravel road at the sign to Holmes Crossing Ecological Reserve and drive for about 4km. Park where indicated.   

From Calgary: take QEll Hwy, then the Anthony Henday Drive west to join the Yellowhead Hwy 16; then follow the directions from West Edmonton above.

EATING AND SLEEPING
SATURDAY EVENING FEAST
Dinner at the Legion Hall on Main Street, Fort Assiniboine on Saturday evening. (Vegetarian option available)
Eleven and older $20.00, ten and under $10.00 (price for very small children by arrangement)
Limited number of tickets. 
If you want to buy just a feast ticket, you can write a cheque or put the cash in an envelope and give it to one of the organizers on a Wednesday event.
